Written in 1963, the manuscript for Memory was discovered among Don’s papers shortly after his sudden death on New Year’s Eve in 2008. Longtime friend and colleague, and occasional co-conspirator, Lawrence Block, had this to say about the book:
“I was trying to imagine what Don’s career, his whole body of work, might have been like if Memory has been published back in ’63… Assuming it had been published and been well received it’s just unknowable. Would he have gone on to write more books like that or would he have wound up writing the books that he did write? … I remember I read it in one sitting. It was a healthy-sized book but I stayed up all night. I was enormously impressed. And I’m delighted that it’s going to come out.”
